News from the Legislative Session - February 25, 2008

Today in the Legislature

Well the Judiciary Committee is at it again. They want to make it easier for western and rural Nebraska to have their judges taken from them for urban Nebraska. I opposed the provision of LB 1014 that would let the Supreme Court vote to take away judges from one district and give them to another. Currently the Legislature has to make that decision and there is a check and balance to ensure it is not done without public input from both lawyers and citizens. The bill advanced, barely, due to the other considerations of the bill but will be debated again and hopefully will recognize the impact such a law may have on the ability for justice to be handled in an efficient manner - instead of counties waiting for their day once a month for court.
